If you hire an unlicensed contractor, you risk your safety and legal and financial protection. The most common consequences include:

  • Safety Hazards: Licensed electricians follow the latest safety codes and regulations in their state and city. Unlicensed workers are usually not up to date on these regulations and may even ignore them entirely to save time and money.
  • Insurance Rejection: Most homeowners’ insurance policies require electrical work to be performed by a licensed professional. If an unlicensed contractor’s work causes serious damage, like fires, your insurance company may refuse to pay for the damages.
  • Failed Home Sales: When you sell your home, an inspector will check the electrical panel and verify that all major work is up to code with the proper permits. If they find unpermitted or substandard work, you’ll likely have to pay a licensed electrician to tear it out and redo it before the sale can close.

Yes, licensed electrical contractors are legally required to follow electrical safety codes and regulations for any project. These include:

  • The National Electrical Code (NEC): This is the “gold standard” for electrical safety in the United States. It is a massive set of rules updated every three years that dictates everything from how many outlets you need in a kitchen to exactly how deep a wire must be buried in your yard.
  • The NEC standards followed vary by state, but a licensed electrician should always be current on the specific edition adopted by your jurisdiction.

  • Local Municipal Regulations: Your city or county likely has its own specific “amendments” to the national code. These local rules account for your area’s specific climate, soil type, and regional building habits.

Not every electrical issue requires a service call, but the following signs are clear indicators that your system is struggling or unsafe. If you notice any of these, professional electrical repair is highly recommended:

  • Flickering or Dimming Lights: Usually indicates an overloaded circuit or a loose connection.
  • Frequently Tripping Breakers: A sign that a circuit is consistently drawing more power than it can safely handle.
  • Discolored or Warm Outlets: This is a major warning sign of "arcing," which creates intense heat inside your walls.
  • Burning Smells or "Sizzling" Sounds: Indicates an active electrical fault or a failing wire connection.
  • Loose Outlets: If plugs slide out easily, the internal contacts are worn, creating a high-heat fire risk.
  • Sparking: Any spark when plugging in or unplugging an appliance requires an immediate professional inspection.
  • Persistent Burning Plastic Smell: This often indicates that nearby wire insulation is melting.

Whether you can wire an appliance yourself depends on the type of connection it requires.

  • When You Can DIY: If it has a three-prong cord and your wall already has a matching outlet, you can usually handle the installation yourself. This commonly includes appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, or gas ranges.
  • When to Call a Professional: If your appliance requires hardwiring or high-voltage circuits, you should hire an electrician. This typically includes appliances such as dishwashers, garbage disposals, electric dryers, water heaters, and EV chargers.

Most homeowner insurance policies require electrical work to be completed by a licensed contractor. If major damage is traced back to unlicensed or DIY work, your provider can legally deny your claim.

The technician was most pleasant and explained everything that he noticed. He was only here to do a plumbing evaluation of the home. He gave some excellent insights about the workings of the home. I would highly recommend him again. He replaced a leaky faucet for one of our bathroom sinks, and also replaced four turn off valves for the supply lines for both sinks.

  • kristine0
Had to have all 7 smoke detectors replaced and an outlet replaced. The only complaint is that when I made the appointment through the chat option, I said that I needed them to bring the smoke detectors. This was not relayed to the electrician and he had to go purchase them. Nothing that I talked about via the chat was relayed to the electrician. Maybe get rid of making appointments that way.

  • Nick Bruno
I've had, kid you not, 4 "big name" plumbing companies give me a quote on unclogging my bathroom sink pipe. The least expensive was $500. Didn't inspect anything, didn't ask questions, they just looked at the sink an pulled out their little chart and said "bathroom sink, $500". I said its a clog barely outta reach of me, it'll likely take you less than 10 minutes...$500. See ya. The following 3 companies wouldn't even entertain snaking the pipe, all tried to pressure me into ridiculous cost of completely replacing the plumbing stack. Is it needed in the future? Sure, but from a simple clog to a 10,12,14k major remodel? Forget them. Find a company that'll do right by you, not only their pocket. Theo was my tech today and he was 10/10. Very knowledgeable, super respectful and most importantly, REAL. He checked out the sink, checked out the stack, did a full inspection and guess what? He then executed the job that was asked of him. 10 minutes completely cleared out the clog. This sink hasn't worked in almost a year because I refused to be strong armed by a money hungry company. Glad I waited! Keep doing you Wyatt Works! I already have 2 people reaching out to you for their needs.
  • Eric Van Boxel
