Hot Water on Demand

Expert Tankless Water Heater Repair, Replacement, Installation, & Maintenance

Conventional storage water heaters dominate the market as the most popular water heating systems in the United States.1 However, these water heaters are not the only (or most efficient) option available to consumers.

Tankless water heaters (also known as on-demand or instantaneous water heaters) heat water on demand. With no tank, less energy is wasted heating water, and there is no risk of running out of hot water.

At WyattWorks, we offer complete tankless water heater services in Ohio & North Carolina, {fran_state_abbrev}, including repair, replacement, installation, and maintenance.

What Is a Tankless Water Heater?

There are two main types of tankless water heaters: gas-fired and electric. Both types do not have a storage tank and will remain in a standby state until you turn on a hot water tap.

Once you open a tap, a built-in flow sensor detects water movement, activates the system, and the unit begins rapidly heating the incoming cold water. How fast you’ll feel the hot water at the faucet depends on your plumbing setup and distance from the unit; typically, it takes between 15 and 30 seconds, but it can take longer.

Benefits of Tankless Systems:

Endless Hot Water

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand instead of storing a limited supply. You can take long showers, run back-to-back laundry loads, and keep multiple appliances on at once as long as demand does not exceed the unit’s capacity.

Higher Energy Efficiency

Tankless water heaters do not run continuously. They consume a small amount of energy in standby mode to stay active, but no energy is wasted keeping a large tank of water hot, like in conventional units. This helps homeowners save money on utility bills and reduces overall energy consumption.

Longer Lifespans

Tankless water heaters can last 15 to 20 years with proper maintenance. This is nearly double the lifespan of traditional tank-style heaters, which last about 10 to 15 years.

Space-Saving Design

Tankless systems are much smaller than conventional heaters because they don’t have a bulky tank. They are most commonly installed as wall-mounted units, which saves floor space and keeps utility areas more open.

Lower Risk of Water Damage

Because tankless systems do not have a storage tank with gallons of water, there is reduced risk of corrosion, tank rupture, or sudden system failure. While tankless systems can still malfunction and leak, the overall risk and severity of water damage is much lower compared to traditional storage units.

Tankless vs. Tank Water Heaters

Feature Tankless Water Heater Traditional Tank Water Heater

Hot Water Supply

Provides on-demand hot water and can supply continuous hot water without running out.

Stores a limited amount of hot water (typically 30–80 gallons), which can run out during heavy use.

Energy Efficiency

More energy efficient—only heats water when it’s needed, no standby heat loss.

Low efficiency—water in the tank must be continuously heated, even when not in use.

Lifespan

Typically lasts around 20 years or more with proper maintenance.

Usually lasts 10–15 years before needing replacement.

Space Requirements

Compact and wall-mounted, making it ideal for small spaces.

Larger and floor-standing, requiring more installation space.

Risk of Major Leaks

Lower risk of major water damage because it does not store large amounts of water.

Higher risk of significant leaks because the tank holds dozens of gallons of water under pressure.

Tankless Water Heater FAQs

See More FAQs
  • Higher Upfront Cost: Tankless systems usually cost more to purchase and install than traditional tank water heaters. This higher upfront investment may not be ideal for some homeowners and is often the biggest deterrent when considering a switch.
  • Limited Output for Simultaneous Use: Tankless units have a maximum flow rate. While they can handle multiple appliances better than storage tank systems, too many used simultaneously can cause a drop in water temperature or pressure.
  • Possible Installation Upgrades: Switching from a tank system to tankless may require additional work, such as new venting, electrical upgrades, or gas line modifications, which can increase installation complexity and overall cost.
  • Maintenance Requirements: To keep the system running efficiently, annual professional maintenance is highly recommended. Tankless units are more complex than conventional tank-style systems, and servicing them often requires specialized knowledge and tools.

Both options have different benefits and trade-offs. Below, you can see which option may be the best fit based on your needs and goals:

Choose a tankless water heater if:

  • You want endless hot water
  • You have limited space in your utility area
  • You don't mind the higher installation cost
  • You're planning to own your home long-term
  • You want to save on energy bills and improve overall efficiency

Choose a traditional tank water heater if:

  • You prefer a simpler system
  • You have moderate hot water usage
  • You want a lower upfront installation cost
  • You don't mind running out of hot water during heavy use

Yes, you can! Keep in mind that the replacement process is a bit more complicated and can sometimes be more expensive than replacing a tank unit with the same type. A lot will depend on your home’s current setup, and some components may need to be upgraded or modified.

The most common problem with tankless water heaters is mineral buildup (also known as scaling) inside the system.

As water flows through the unit, minerals such as calcium and magnesium can collect inside the heat exchanger. This buildup restricts water flow and makes it harder for the system to heat efficiently.

If you notice reduced hot water flow, inconsistent water temperatures, system error codes, or longer wait times for hot water, it’s likely mineral buildup. Reaching out to a plumber for an inspection and maintenance service is the best way to prevent further damage and keep your system running efficiently.

Yes, tankless water heaters are usually more expensive upfront than tank heaters.

The technician was most pleasant and explained everything that he noticed. He was only here to do a plumbing evaluation of the home. He gave some excellent insights about the workings of the home. I would highly recommend him again. He replaced a leaky faucet for one of our bathroom sinks, and also replaced four turn off valves for the supply lines for both sinks.

Kyle, my service technician was extremely polite. He asked what needs to be done. Quoted me a price with options and completed the work very efficiently and professionally, and even cleaned the floor behind the refrigerator where the work had to be done at. he also brought everything else up to code. Wyattworks might not be the Cheapest, but they do the best work and it’s done right the first time.

  • kristine0
Had to have all 7 smoke detectors replaced and an outlet replaced. The only complaint is that when I made the appointment through the chat option, I said that I needed them to bring the smoke detectors. This was not relayed to the electrician and he had to go purchase them. Nothing that I talked about via the chat was relayed to the electrician. Maybe get rid of making appointments that way.

  • Nick Bruno
I've had, kid you not, 4 "big name" plumbing companies give me a quote on unclogging my bathroom sink pipe. The least expensive was $500. Didn't inspect anything, didn't ask questions, they just looked at the sink an pulled out their little chart and said "bathroom sink, $500". I said its a clog barely outta reach of me, it'll likely take you less than 10 minutes...$500. See ya. The following 3 companies wouldn't even entertain snaking the pipe, all tried to pressure me into ridiculous cost of completely replacing the plumbing stack. Is it needed in the future? Sure, but from a simple clog to a 10,12,14k major remodel? Forget them. Find a company that'll do right by you, not only their pocket. Theo was my tech today and he was 10/10. Very knowledgeable, super respectful and most importantly, REAL. He checked out the sink, checked out the stack, did a full inspection and guess what? He then executed the job that was asked of him. 10 minutes completely cleared out the clog. This sink hasn't worked in almost a year because I refused to be strong armed by a money hungry company. Glad I waited! Keep doing you Wyatt Works! I already have 2 people reaching out to you for their needs.
  • Eric Van Boxel
